URI Researchers awarded $4.7M for cyber-physical security and resilience study
New England Council member, University of Rhode Island engineering professors have been granted $4.7 million by the U.S. Office of Naval Research for its research project. This initiative focuses on analyzing the state of cyber-infrastructure and the risks associated with the growing use of automation and artificial intelligence in critical areas such as power grids, manufacturing systems, transportation networks, and healthcare infrastructure across the United States.
The project, titled “Advancing Research on Cyber-Physical Security and Resilience: A Multifaceted Approach,” will be led by Yan Sun, a professor and the chair of the URI Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering. Sun will collaborate with professors Hui Lin, Kaushallya Adhikari, and Manbir Sodhi. Over the next three years, the team aims to enhance the resilience of AI-enabled power grids, foster workforce development, and secure manufacturing environments. Additionally, they will study the broader impacts of increased technology use in the commercial markets. This research is important to maintain the strength and reliability of cyber-physical infrastructure and equipping the next generation of researchers and professionals to address these challenges. “The better we understand how the power grid behaves, the better we can protect it. There’s the big picture aspect, but under that umbrella there’s a lot of innovation in there,” said Sun.
The New England Council congratulates the URI professors on this notable achievement.
