RxPass: Amazon’s new $5-per-month prescription drug service
New England Council member, Amazon, announced that it will be launching “RxPass,” a $5-per-month service that will fill prime members’ prescriptions.
With the rapidly rising prices of prescription drugs, Amazon’s goal is to alleviate the costs of about 50 generically prescribed drugs. Amazon currently sells a broad range of generic drugs through its pharmacy service, some only costing $1 for a 30-day supply, but RxPass ensures individuals can acquire as many prescriptions as needed with a monthly payment. Currently, this program does not require insurance, and, at launch, will be available in 42 states and Washington, DC.
“Any program that gets low-cost generic drugs to more patients is a good thing,” said Karen Van Nuys, an economist who studies drug pricing at the University of Southern California.
The New England Council commends Amazon for implementing this initiative that will make prescription drugs more affordable and accessible for those in need.
