RTX signs $5.5 billion contract modification with U.S. Air Force
Through its subsidiary Pratt & Whitney, New England Council member RTX has signed a $5.5 billion contract modification with the United States Air Force (USAF).
The contract will provide engine sustainability support for C-17s in USAF fleet and is set to run into late 2027. This addition to the contract will aid the affordability and readiness of the aircraft, as it increases fuel efficiency and reliability of the F117 engines that C-17s utilize. This improvement will result in an estimated savings of $29 million in fuel expenses per year and reduce CO2 emissions by nearly 140 million pounds per year. With the implementation of these improved technologies, engine reliability will be bolstered, resulting in the anticipated elimination of 20 shop visits annually.
“If we can improve durability for the Air Force while lessening impact on the environment, then that is a win-win,” said Chris Johnson, vice president of Fighter and Mobility Programs at Pratt & Whitney. “One specific product improvement we are looking to incorporate under this contract is a compressor blade coating technology, which… can extend time on wing by up to 16% and reduce fuel burn by over 1%.”
The New England Council commends RTX for its improvements in efficiency and sustainability.
