GBFB Report shows high levels of food insecurity
A new report from New England Council member, Greater Boston Food Bank, reveals that food insecurity remains a pressing issue in Massachusetts. One in three adults experienced limited access to adequate food, with 20% facing “very low” food security.
GBFB conducted an online survey of over 3,000 adults in Massachusetts from November 2022 to January 2023. The survey aimed to ensure the representation of diverse voices and used weighting methods to create estimates representative of the state’s population. Input from state, community, and healthcare partners was incorporated in developing the survey.
The report maintains that reliance on food pantries and federal assistance programs stems from economic challenges such as rising grocery costs, inflation, and the end of programs like the Child Tax Credit. However, interventions such as food insecurity screenings in healthcare settings and increased SNAP benefits showed promise in addressing the issue. Nonetheless, the Greater Boston Food Bank holds that more comprehensive solutions and coordination across communities and healthcare can bridge food equity and access.
The New England Council commends the Greater Boston Food Bank for its dedication to the community.
