Boston Children’s opens specialty pharmacy with Shields
New England Council member, Boston Children’s, launched a specialty pharmacy last week in partnership with Shields Health Solutions. Boston Children’s owns the pharmacy and will employ the pharmacists at the site, while Shields Health Solutions helps secure financial assistance for patients and provides them with liaisons to help “navigate hurdles” during their time at the pharmacy.
This pharmacy is the first outpatient pharmacy opened by Children’s and caters to patients with unique pharmacy needs. It will focus on medications that need “special handling” and patients with “complex chronic conditions.” The pharmacy will provide medications in four specialties: neurology, endocrinology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology. There are also plans for the pharmacy to expand to six specialties in the future.
Dan Ramey, chief operating officer for Shields, stated that specialty pharmacy care is “oriented at providing a white glove service for patients who have the most critical outpatient pharmacy needs,” emphasizing the need for “robust infrastructure” to support specialty pharmacies.
The New England Council applauds Boston Children’s for its efforts to make healthcare more accessible through expanding its services.
