Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts sponsors free ‘BlueBikes’ rides on Election Day
New England Council member, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, helped voters during the election cycle by providing free bike rides through BlueBikes day passes. With this offer, passengers were offered unlimited classic 2-hour bike rides and free e-bike unlocks to help them get to the polls.
“During this election season, we are dedicated to eliminating transportation barriers so every citizen can exercise their right to vote,” said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross. “Bluebikes offers a convenient and accessible transportation option for residents across Metro Boston, particularly for those in underserved and underrepresented communities who may face challenges getting to their polling places.”
The BlueBikes system spans over 13 municipalities in Massachusetts, including: Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville, and Watertown.
The initiative addresses a significant burden that voters face with not having access to a car. According to a study by Harvard University, lack of access to transportation can significantly reduce voter turnout.
The New England Council commends Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts in this initiative to grant transportation access to voters.
