Highway Bill Reauthorization

MAP-21, the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act was signed into law by President Obama in July 2012, funding surface transportation programs at over $105 billion for fiscal years (FY) 2013 and 2014.  With MAP-21 due to expire at the end of September 2014, the Council urged Congressional leaders to reauthorize what is commonly known as the “Highway Bill” on a longer-term basis.  In a letter to the leaders of the key committees and subcommittees working on reauthorization, the Council stressed the importance of a longer term funding measure, noting the potential for job creation and economic stability and growth.  In late March and early April 2014, letters were sent to:

  • Senate Environment & Public Works Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Ranking Member David Vitter (R-LA)
  • Senate Subcommittee on Transportation & Infrastructure Chairman Tom Carper (D-DE) and Ranking Member John Barrasso (R-WY)
  • House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) and Ranking Member Nick Rahall (D-WV)
  • House Subcommittee on Highways & Transit Chairman Thomas Petri (R-WI) and Ranking Member Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC)

Copies of the letters were also sent to all members of the New England Congressional Delegation.
