Huntsman: ‘I might not have the Texas Rangers’

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) – Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman jokingly pointed out a key difference between his campaign and that of Rick Perry’s, telling an audience he “might not have the Texas Rangers” accompanying him on the trail.

The Texas governor is protected by a security detail of iconic Texas Rangers as he travels the country.

“I might not have the Texas Rangers here. I might not have a large entourage,” Huntsman said at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics’ breakfast event, where candidates come to speak to a group of state politicos. “But I did bring a secret weapon that nobody else has, and that’s the finest human being I’ve ever known over 28 years, my wife Mary Kaye Huntsman.”

The former Utah governor was introduced with an anecdote about his low-key approach to security while he was in China.

“He surprised many by shunning an official motorcade to ride his bicycle to meetings with Chinese officials,” said Jim Brett, president of the New England Council, which co-hosts the Politics and Eggs event.

Speaking to the media after the event, Huntsman was asked about his “swipe” at Perry.

“That wasn’t much of a swipe,” he said. “Rick’s a friend. I didn’t agree with what he said about the Federal Reserve chairman. That was a little bit inappropriate and out there.”

He was referring to Perry’s remarks earlier in August saying Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would be “treasonous” if he printed more money before next year’s election.

Huntsman refused to answer further questions about his opponents, but said that doesn’t mean he won’t hold his own at a series of televised debates in September.

“Civility can coexist with the facts,” he told the press. “And people will want to bring out the facts, and you’ll be comparing and contrasting yourself. Others will be comparing and contrasting themselves. I think that’s all part of any primary affair.”
