Wentworth Institute of Technology Welcomes New President

Wentworth Institute of Technology, a New England Council member, has announced the appointment of Mark Thompson as the Institute’s 5th president. Wentworth is a private technical design and engineering university located in Boston.

A Massachusetts native, Thompson takes on this role after serving for several years as Provost at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut. Thompson sees various opportunities for growth at Wentworth, including expanding their graduate programs, adult education options, and programming for veterans. Thompson is particularly interested in transforming Wentworth into a “talent pipeline” for local companies in need of new engineers and technical design employees. Thompson hopes that such companies would contribute to course curriculums, assuring the university’s students are well prepared to serve the current labor market needs.

In a recent interview with the Boston Business Journal, Thompson elaborated: “Where I am seeing success is at institutions that understand they have to enhance the value proposition and how they deliver education, the types of programs they have, how they pay attention to the student experience holistically and paying attention to what employers really want in terms of skills.”

The Council congratulates Mark Thompson on his appointment and looks forward to working with him and his colleagues at Wentworth Institute of Technology on our shared goals of developing a pipeline of talented workers for the region’s innovation economy.
