University of Maine System Announces Cybersecurity Degree
The Board of Trustees of the University of Maine system, an NEC member, recently approved a new Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity at the University of Maine Augusta (UMA). It will be offered through a partnership between UMA, the University of Maine at Fort Kent, University of Maine, and the University of Southern Maine.
According to a press release from UMA, the degree will be multidisciplinary and will include computer science, communications, and ethics courses. The university will also offer a post-graduate option. Based on existing curriculum at several of the partner schools and a virtual lab created by the University of Southern Maine, the degree is anticipated to yield savings, thanks to the cooperation and sharing of resources between schools. The courses required to complete the major can all be taken online or through a combination of online, TV, and live classes. The curriculum has been designed to meet the standards set by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Center of Academics Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense and is the first system-collaborated degree to be recognized by the Center.
“The bachelor of cybersecurity will allow each school to have a common core of curriculum that’s been agreed upon by all the schools involved. So what will you do with a degree in cybersecurity? There are various opportunities available. You can go into the field of information assurance; you can become a security analyst. You can become a security architect and design secure systems. You can go into forensics and go in and find out what happened during a data breach and how it occurred,” said Henry Felch, an Assistant Professor of Computer Information Systems at UMA, in a video promoting the major.
