UNH Medal of Honor Recipient to Give Commencement Address
Graduates of NEC member University of New Hampshire (UNH) will hear a commencement address from a very special UNH graduate this year. Former US Army staff sergeant Ryan Pitts will be delivering the address to the class of 2015.
Staff Sgt. Pitts was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 21, 2014, for his actions on July 13, 2008, during the Battle of Wanat. He is the ninth living recipient of the Medal of Honor for combat actions in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Pitts graduated summa cum laude from UNH’s business program in Manchester, NH, in 2013 with a near-perfect GPA. In addition to being named a Presidential Scholar, Staff Sgt. Pitts was awarded the Brennan Award for character, perseverance and academic excellence and a UNH Award of Excellence, as well as several student leadership prizes. Staff Sgt. Pitts is also a member of the UNH Alumni Association advisory board.
In an early January article about Staff Sgt. Pitts in UNH Today, interim dean J. Michael Hickey said of the Medal of Honor recipient, “You go through life and you meet all types of individuals. Ryan personifies the type of leadership that not many people possess. He knows what’s important.”
The New England Council thanks Staff Sgt. Pitts for his valiant service and looks forward to hearing his address.
