Turkish Airlines Celebrates Opening of Istanbul Airport
NEC member Turkish Airlines recently announced that “Istanbul Airport” had officially opened, which will establish Istanbul as a central point of aviation and travel. Upon its completion, the airport is expected to welcome around 200 million passengers per year, and serve as the world’s largest international hub.
The airport’s opening ceremony coincided with the 95th anniversary of the founding of the Republic. Amid the festivities, passengers on the first Turkish Airlines flights landing in the new airport received souvenir tickets. Though limited flights are operating today, additional flights will be added to Istanbul’s new airport through December 30th, after which all operations will move from Istanbul Ataturk Airport to Istanbul Airport. The airport megaproject – which boasts six runways, four terminals, 233 aircraft parking positions, more than 500 check-in desks, and requires 225,000 employees – is set to reach its final phase of completion in 2028.
Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines stated at the opening ceremony, “Turkish Airlines starts an exciting new chapter today as we move to our new home at Istanbul Airport. The new hub of our national flag carrier plays an important role in Turkish Airlines’ future growth strategy and will offer a seamless experience to our passengers, international and domestic alike.”
The NEC congratulates Turkish Airlines on their move to this new facility which will usher in an exciting new era of Turkish aviation.
