Tufts Health Plan Foundation Promotes Healthy Aging through Grants to Nonprofits
Tufts Health Plan Foundation, a NEC member, recently completed its first cycle of funding for 2013 and awarded more than $1.6 million in grants to Massachusetts and Rhode Island based organizations. Grants, funded by the assets of the health plan, help the Foundation achieve its mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and delivering quality care in the community. The focus of the Foundation, which has donated approximately $10 million since 2009, is improving the lives of older adults and allowing them to live healthier and happier lives.
During its first funding cycle, the Foundation awarded the largest number of grants to Health & Wellness programs and in the area of Purposeful Engagement. The Health & Wellness program area focuses on the promotion of exercise, nutrition, and other aspects of living a healthy life. The Purposeful Engagement grants fund programs and initiatives that promote involvement in the community; this can range from volunteering, caregiving support programs, and other activities that serve the larger community.
“Health and wellness programs are critical to healthy aging, but so are programs that change people’s lives through social and purposeful engagement,” said David Abelman, president of the Tufts Health Plan Foundation. “We’re proud to partner with a diverse group of nonprofit organizations that recognize how important health education, social connections, physical activity and community service are to improving the overall health and well-being of a growing population of older adults.”
The Tufts Health Plan Foundation will announce a new cycle of funding later in the year that will provide additional support to organizations that strive to improve public health. The Massachusetts and Rhode Island area organizations are lucky to have a great partner in the Foundation that provides them with funding for achieving their goals. The New England Council would like to applaud Tufts Health Plan Foundation for its giving to the region and look forward to them continuing their work.
