Partners HealthCare Names New President and CEO

Earlier this month, New England Council Member Partners HealthCare named Dr. David Torchiana as its new President and CEO.  Dr. Torchiana will succeed Dr. Gary Gottlieb who announced last fall that he would be leaving to serve as President and CEO of Partners in Health, a global health organization.  Dr. Gottlieb is a 2014 New England Council “New Englander of the Year.”

Dr. Torchiana will assume his new role in March 2015. He is currently the Chairman and CEO of Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) which is the largest physician group practice in New England, representing more than 2,000 physicians. Dr. Torchiana graduated from Yale in 1976 and Harvard Medical School in 1981 and completed residencies at Massachusetts General Hospital in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. He joined the Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1989 and became chief of cardiac surgery there in 1998. He became the CEO of MGPO in 2003. Dr. Torchiana is an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. He was selected to lead Partners HealthCare after a four-month search process. He was selected unanimously by the Board of Directors.

“Dr. Torchiana possesses the instincts and the political savvy to be an outstanding leader for Partners. He has an appreciation for each institution within the Partners HealthCare system and all the remarkable people who dedicate themselves to the mission every day. During times of uncertainty in the health care environment, Dr. Torchiana will be a leader who provides stability and lends a voice of assurance that Partners wants to help address the challenges and be part of a solution,” said Edward Lawrence, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Partners HealthCare.

The New England Council congratulates Partners HealthCare on its selection of a new CEO and extends to Dr. Torchiana best wishes as he transitions into his new role.  In addition, the Council salutes Dr. Gary Gottlieb for his contributions to the field of medicine and for his extraordinary service to the New England community.

Please see Partners HealthCare’s press release. Dr. Torchiana was also the subject of a recent article in the Boston Business Journal.
