Partners HealthCare Awarded Grant

NEC member Partners HealthCare was recently awarded a grant to study personal health trackers. The grant, awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is in the amount of $468,000.

Personal health technologies have been proven to increase physical activity however they aren’t widely used and those who do employ them tend to discontinue use after a short period of time. Partners HealthCare and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation are interested in discovering ways to encourage widespread continued use of health and activity trackers, which have a proven beneficial impact on many major health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. With the grant, Partners will develop an ‘Engagement Engine’ which will support continued use of health trackers and engagement in physical activity. The ‘Engagement Engine’ will be available through Wellocracy, a site developed by Partners to encourage people to use personal trackers, sensors and mobile apps to track their health and physical activity.

“Partners is honored to receive this generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, to enhance our knowledge and ability to increase the appropriate use of personal health devices and activity trackers in health consumers,” said Joseph C. Kvedar, MD, Vice President, Connected Health, Partners HealthCare. “Personalization has been a central theme in our work. This grant allows us to significantly expand our capabilities in data analytics geared towards smart segmentation and personalization.”

The New England Council applauds Partners HealthCare for its’ commitment to empowering people to take charge of their health and fitness routines.
