Northeastern University Wireless Project Receives Federal Label of ‘Innovation Zone’

NEC member Northeastern University’s supercomputer known as ‘Colosseum’ on the has been designated as a Federal Innovation Zone by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This innovation zone designation launches Northeastern into a national leadership role in wireless research, which it shares with Raleigh, N.C., New York City, and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Supercomputer Colosseum on Northeastern’s Burlington, MA, campus has advanced capabilities that allow it to detect many forms of mobile technologies, such as cellular data, WiFi, Bluetooth, to name a few. The aim of Northeastern’s project with Colosseum is to develop artificial intelligence software to enhance the capabilities of wireless connections and to improve wireless security. The supercomputer has been instrumental in the rollout of 5G, and in future will aid in the creation of 6G and teaching artificial intelligence programs how to manage networks.

Northeastern Professor Tommaso Melodia, in speaking of the Northeastern’s work with Colosseum, said, “We’re trying to extend Colosseum to work on some of these higher-frequency bands that are going to be key for future wireless communications…[a]nd Colosseum, we think, will play a very important role in creating these intelligent networks of the future”.

The New England Council congratulates Northeastern University on this important achievement in the world of wireless technology.
