NEC Member Amica launches Community Challenge in RI

Monday, January 14th, marked the first day of NEC member Amica Mutual Insurance Company’s month-long Community Challenge. In partnership with Crossroads Rhode Island, the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the United Way of Rhode Island, Amica is encouraging Rhode Island residents and businesses to make charitable donations to one or more of the three community organizations. Amica will then match those donations to each organization, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 per charity until February 15th.

Amica’s initiative  comes at a time when the full impact of winter is just beginning to be felt, and those in need require assistance. Crossroads, which provides housing for the homeless, had said at Monday’s news conference that it had experienced a 27 percent increase in those seeking shelter.

Similarly, the two other partner charities, The United Way of Rhode Island and The Rhode Island Community Food Bank, expressed an increase in need in recent years in lieu of the state’s ailing economy.

“You don’t get too many opportunities like this,” said Tony Maione, President and CEO of the United Way of Rhode Island. “To get a dollar-for-dollar match for every dollar raised is a great way for donors who care about the struggle for food, who care about the struggle for housing, who care about the struggle for heat, to double-up.”

The New England Council would like to extend its best wishes to Amica for its philanthropic endeavor!
