NEC Hosts DC Cyber Policy Discussion

Senator Whitehouse, Hill Staffers Talk Cyber Legislation

Whitehouse PodiumOn September 24, 2013, the New England Council’s Technology Committee and Defense Working Group partnered to present, “Combating Cybersecurity Threats: Prospects for Congressional Action.”  The event was hosted by NEC member Microsoft at the Microsoft Innovation & Policy Center in Washington, DC.  Approximately 50 NEC members and guests representing a wide range of industries attended.

Following opening remarks from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism, a panel of Congressional staff members discussed the outlook for legislative action on a range of cybersecurity issues.  Eric Wenger, Policy Counsel at Microsoft moderated the discussion, with the following panelists:

  • Cyber Panel 2Naz Durakoglu, Legislative Director, Office of Rep. William Keating (D-MA)
  • Mike Hermann, Military Legislative Assistant, Office of Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI)
  • Rebecca Seidel, Chief Republican Counsel, Senate Commerce Committee
  • John Williams, Majority General Counsel, Senate Commerce Committee
