NEC Board Member Plays Important Role at Boston Marathon
For NEC board member Tom Samoluk, this year’s running of the Boston Marathon was even more special than most. Samoluk, Vice President and Counsel at John Hancock Financial Services had the honor of presenting the medal to the winner of the Marathon’s men’s wheelchair division.
Samoluk presented the first place medal to Marcel Hug, the defending champion from Switzerland who won the wheelchair race with an official time of 1:24:06. Although a first place marathon win is always a big accomplishment, this one was even bigger, as the Boston Marathon wheelchair race was the first event in the inaugural Abbott World Marathon Majors Wheelchair Series, which will conclude with next year’s Boston Marathon. Samoluk congratulated Hug on behalf of himself, the people of Boston, and John Hancock, which has been the principal sponsor of the marathon for over 30 years.
“We are especially grateful for the Boston Athletic Association and literally thousands of people who work to make the marathon what it is – and we think all involved should feel a collective sense of pride in what is truly a world class event,” said John Hancock chief administrative officer James Gallagher.
The New England Council thanks Tom and John Hancock for representing Boston and the Council so well at this iconic event.
