June 24 Daily Round-Up: NEC Members Contribute to COVID-19 Crisis Response
As our region and our nation continue to grapple with the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, The New England Council is using our blog as a platform to highlight some of the incredible work our members have undertaken to respond to the outbreak. Each day, we’ll post a round-up of updates on some of the initiatives underway among Council members throughout the region. We are also sharing these updates via our social media, and encourage our members to share with us any information on their efforts so that we can be sure to include them in these daily round-ups.
Tufts University Students Aiding Health Departments’ Response to Virus – Students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Tufts University are assisting local health departments in their response to COVID-19. Volunteering as contact tracers, health communication professionals, and data entry workers, the MPH students are providing important assistance to aid their community’s containment efforts. Beacon Health Options Highlighted for Leading Behavioral Health Changes – Beacon Health Options Executive Vice President Daniel Risku was featured in the National Law Review, discussing the provider’s response to COVID-19, and Beacon Health Options’ role in new trends in behavioral care. Risku discussed the company’s use of technology, specifically data analytics and telemedicine, to shape the industry of mental health care.

Boeing Begins Study of Virus Behavior During Flights – Boeing, in partnership with Airbus, is studying how COVID-19 behaves and spreads inside airplanes. Utilizing engineers, medical professionals, and researchers across disciplines, the study seeks to understand what precautions can be taken to ensure safe travel and the risks associated with flying. The Wall Street Journal reports.
IAFF Launches Resource Portal for Member Unions – The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) has created a resource hub for affiliates seeking assistance or guidance during the pandemic. IAFF’s page includes substance use resources, news updates, and guidance to keep the public and firefighters safe.
WPI Hosting Community Art Event with COVID-19 Theme – Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is holding a WPI+Arts event highlighting art from the university community showing individuals’ experiences during COVID-19. From human connection to the meaning of “home,” the exhibition offers a creative outlet for students as well as prizes for submissions. Read more.
FHLBank Boston Offers $1 Billion in Loans to Small Businesses – The Federal Home Loan Bank in Boston is joining its ten counterparts across the country in supporting communities by providing zero-interest loans and other forms of assistance to small businesses. In Boston, the network has pledged $1 billion to businesses to address the needs of companies that were unable to or did not receive sufficient Payment Protection Program (PPP) loans. Read more here.
