June 23 Daily Round-Up: NEC Members Contribute to COVID-19 Crisis Response
As our region and our nation continue to grapple with the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic, The New England Council is using our blog as a platform to highlight some of the incredible work our members have undertaken to respond to the outbreak. Each day, we’ll post a round-up of updates on some of the initiatives underway among Council members throughout the region. We are also sharing these updates via our social media, and encourage our members to share with us any information on their efforts so that we can be sure to include them in these daily round-ups.
UMaine Opens Remote Stress Clinic – The Psychological Services Center at the University of Maine (UMaine) is opening its COVID-19 Stress Clinic to new clients. Run by clinicians and psychologists from the university, the clinic offers virtual services to offer assistance in coping with the stress caused by the pandemic to a wide part of Maine’s population. Brigham and Women’s Converts Facilities to Negative Pressure Areas to Limit Contamination – Brigham and Women’s Hospital has begun rapidly transforming areas of the hospital into negative-pressure wards. By doing so, the hospital has quickly created spaces in which staff and non-infected patients can be eliminate the possibility of transmission in the air. Infection Control Today reports.

Boston Beer Company Offers Professional Development Assistance for Employees – The Boston Beer Company has launched a new program to provide grants to employees seeking to develop personal or professional skills during the pandemic. AARP Offering Virtual Tax Preparation Assistance – AARP is providing free, remote access to tax preparation help across the country. The program connects users of all ages with either a volunteer or easy-to-use software, both with real-time assistance available, at no charge. Read more.
HNTB Publishes Guidance for Use of Federal Relief Funds for Transportation Industry – A new report published by HNTB Corporation outlines best practices for transportation leaders and agencies when using federal funds to aid economic recovery from COVID-19. HNTB offers a comprehensive overview of legal requirements, action steps, and advice for the industry.
Verizon Commits $54 Million in Donations to Nonprofits – Verizon is donating $54 million to charities and nonprofits assisting in COVID-19 relief efforts. Funds will be distributed to a variety of causes, ranging from relief abroad to supporting small businesses. The service provider has been recognized as one of the top companies in both donations and workforce treatment with regard to the pandemic. Multi Channel has more.
TD Bank Offering $10 Million for Nonprofit Solutions to Pandemic Issues – TD Bank has announced plans to provide over $10 million in grants to nonprofits and community organizations working to offer new solutions across North America. The TD Ready Challenge will give the funds to organizations addressing the issues of both the pandemic and its unequal effect across the continent. Read more here.
