Bowditch & Dewey law firm, a New England Council member, has recently announced plans to launch a craft brewing practice group, catering to the various legal needs of the many existing and emerging craft breweries in Massachusetts and beyond.
Lawyers from all three of the firm’s offices in Framingham, Boston and Worcester will be tapped to form the group. This specialty practice will address issues that brewers might face, including corporate formation, real estate, environmental, employment, insurance and licensing issues. The firm also aims to help small brewers make inroads with distributors. Attorney Bob Young, who chairs the group, and considers himself a craft-beer aficionado, sees the craft beer industry as a thriving driver of economic growth, and believes the services and expertise the firm offers will be helpful. The firm has already represented several craft brewers, including a successfully defense of a craft brewer and employee in a non-compete suit brought by a large-scale producer.
“It’s a thriving and growing industry,” said Young of the rapidly expanding craft brewery market. “In a lot of ways, they’re facing issues that are common to a lot of startup businesses. One of the key challenges … for the brewers is how to convert their passion and their skill of making beer into a viable business.”
The New England Council applauds Bowditch & Dewey on this exciting new venture, and thanks them for their support of small businesses in Massachusetts and beyond.
