University of Maine System reports historically high retention rate
New England Council member, University of Maine System, reported a return rate of 75% in the past year, a first in the system’s history. The retention rate is highest in the University of Maine’s flagship campus in Orono, which reported that 82.7% of its students returned to the school seeking a certificate or undergraduate degree.
“One way to continue to build our strength is to make sure that more and more of our students are getting the assistance they need to be retained, and it’s been moving in the right direction,” said Chancellor Dannel Malloy. “And obviously, this year is a banner year for us. We’re very proud of the results across the board, and it bodes well for our graduation rate.”
The university attributes the increase in retention to first-year research opportunities and an increase in academic and emotional support. To meet the student body’s demands, the University of Maine has also provided more course options for the winter and summer semesters.
The New England Council commends University of Maine System for its continued support for students.
