SMCC uses congressional funding for advanced health care training
New England Council member, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) in South Portland has received $1 million in congressional funding for a new mobile learning lab van for STEM training and $4.1 million to create a new health care simulation lab. The Mobile Learning Lab vans will be used to train professionals and middle, high school, and graduate students. The vans will contain state-of-the-art equipment, such as virtual welding units and robotic arms. The stimulation lab will allow students to use hands-on, realistic, technology-based experiences that will stimulate various healthcare environments.
This training push is in response to Maine’s critical shortage of healthcare professionals. This long-standing issue was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The investment in these training facilities aims to meet these industry needs.
“With our commitment to affordability and accessibility, as well as our commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, SMCC serves the community through various degree and certificate programs, workforce training, and learning opportunities,” said Matt Goodman, SMCC dean of academic excellence and strategic initiatives. ”This allocation of federal funding underscores the college’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of Maine’s workforce.”
The New England Council congratulates Southern Maine Community College for receiving this funding and commends the push towards advanced healthcare training.
