Jackson Lab opens new child-care center in Bar Harbor
New England Council member, The Jackson Laboratory, has recently opened a new child-care center on the Bar Harbor campus. The center will be used for the children of Jackson Laboratory employees and community members, who say this project was critical in helping fill a shortage of childcare resources in the area.
The $4.5 million facility is called the Island of Imagination Early Learning Center and has three primary classrooms, each for a different age group, and large indoor and outdoor playgrounds. The project was supported by a grant from the Maine Childcare Infrastructure Grant Program and will be operated by the Down East Family YMCA. With over 20 children enrolled, the center can accommodate up to 50 students.
Jackson Laboratory executives say that this project is a method of investing in their employees. “Many people who wanted to join the lab couldn’t find housing or childcare. So, this is one other way to invest in our people to promote recruitment and retention,” said Kate Longley, Jackson Laboratory’s COO.
The New England Council would like to congratulate The Jackson Laboratory on the opening of this important facility.
