BAE Systems becomes first recipient of CHIPS Act Funding Award
New England Council member BAE Systems has embarked on a collaboration with the U.S. Department of Commerce, marking a significant milestone with a preliminary agreement allocating approximately $35 million under the CHIPS and Science Act.
This strategic investment aims to revitalize BAE Systems Electronic Systems’ Microelectronics Center in Nashua, New Hampshire, a move intended to overhaul outdated tools and substantially boost chip production. Specifically targeted at fortifying vital defense programs like the F-35 fighter jet initiative, this endeavor aligns with BAE Systems’ mission to bolster the nation’s technological edge, fostering job growth and reinforcing self-reliance in semiconductor production. The partnership between BAE Systems and the Biden Administration demonstrates a shared commitment to bolstering national security and driving economic growth through technological advancement.
“Microelectronics are at the heart of the technology and products we make for our defense and aerospace customers—from next-generation aircraft and satellites to military-grade GPS and secure communications,” said Tom Arseneault, president and CEO of BAE Systems, Inc. “This funding will help modernize our Microelectronics Center and fulfill the promise of the CHIPS and Science Act by increasing our capacity to serve national defense programs, growing our technical workforce, and helping to strengthen the nation’s onshore supply chain. This initiative is the result of a strong partnership with federal, state, and local government.”
The New England Council would like to congratulate BAE systems for utilizing the CHIPS Act to make significant strides in technological innovation.
