Point32 announces effort toward maternal health equity
New England Council member, Point32Health, has announced a collaboration with Boston Medical Center to address patient equity in maternal healthcare. Point32 and BMC have implemented a new payment model that caters to the quality of care for pregnant women at higher risks of complications or negative outcomes. This issue is being treated as a racial equity problem, as most of these women identify as women of color.
BMC’s role is to collect self-reported data on race, ethnicity, and the language of patients, which will be used to design initiatives and solutions. Point32 will contribute by taking patient input and satisfaction into consideration, ensuring a good relationship with the women. Patients do not have to be insured by Point32, in order to reach a wider range of individuals. Point32 is also donating an undisclosed amount to BMC’s Health Equity Accelerator Program.
“Health equity is not only a priority for us, it’s almost an imperative to serve our patients that identify as Black, Hispanic or Latino,” said co-executive director of BMC’s Health Equity Accelerator Program Elena Mendez-Escobar. “Maternal care is one of our priority areas, and we’re just really excited partner with Point32.”
The New England Council would like to commend Point32Health for its equity efforts.
