20 Millionth Meal for Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island
In 2022, New England Council member, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island, reached the milestone of delivering their 20 millionth meal. The recipient, Bernadette Cawley, has been a Meals on Wheels client for three years and was visited by Gov. Daniel J. McKee to mark this historic moment in the company’s history.
Since 1969, Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island has provided nutritional meals for older adults and other eligible clients and allows for interpersonal relationships to form through social visits and safety-ensuring wellness checks. The organization’s service has been an important pillar for the Rhode Island community, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These fully prepared meals account for a third of their client’s daily dietary intake and are home-delivered five days out of the week.
“Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island is about much more than delivering the healthy meal that almost 1,500 clients statewide look forward to each weekday,” said Executive Director Meghan Grady. “Our programs holistically address food insecurity, safety risks, and social isolation to prevent loss of independence amongst homebound older adults, like Bernadette who, with support, are able to remain living in their own homes.”
The New England Council congratulates Meals on Wheels of Rhode Island for this accomplishment and thanks them for their commitment to community service.
