Eversource CEO hails State Pier in New London as ‘probably the best site’ between Virginia and Canada for wind power projects
New England Council member Eversource Energy has made progress in its siting process for wind power turbines in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Eversource CEO Joseph R. Nolan Jr., The State Pier in New London, Connecticut is a “superior location” to assemble these turbines, with the company preparing to spend billions of dollars in the upcoming years developing wind power in the region. Expansion of the State Pier to make the location suitable to wind turbine assembly is also in the works.
Eversource spokeswoman Caroline Pretyman says that State Pier’s proximity to offshore leases presents a “strategic opportunity” for the industry to site facilities for wind turbine component assembly and fabrication. This New London State Pier project follows Eversource’s development of Revolution Wind, a 704 MW offshore wind farm that will supply 400 megawatts of power to Rhode Island and 304 megawatts to Connecticut. Nolan said supply chain problems over the past few months have driven up costs higher than expected but remains confident in Eversource’s upcoming projects and optimistic in their environmental impacts.
The New England Council applauds Eversource Energy for its developments in wind energy that can guide the New England region toward a more sustainable future.
