Council Promotes Advanced Manufacturing Sector in New England :
The recent New England Council/Deloitte report highlighted advanced manufacturing -- such as aerospace, medical device and semi-conductor manufacturing – as an industry sector with enormous untapped potential in the region. It is characterized by highly complex and specialized products, "network clusters” of engineers, researchers and precision machinists, and a need for a highly skilled and compensated workforce. With a renewed regional focus on advanced manufacturing, approximately 8,000 new jobs with average salaries of $80,000 could be created in the region every year. Further, at one recent point, approximately 3,000 to 4,000 advanced manufacturing jobs were left unfilled in New England. Given the characteristics that are associated with advanced manufacturing, New England has tremendous potential that can be better leveraged. Steps to better integrate advanced manufacturing opportunities, efficiencies and communications among the New England states will not only enhance the region’s competitiveness, but it will ultimately create high-paying jobs in innovative and reliable sectors.
